RADARSAT-1 images have been obtained to help map the surficial and structural geology of northern Alberta. The RADARSAT-1 imagery is captured over northern Alberta (north of 55 degrees north latitude) using
Of the 274 RADARSAT-1 scenes, 250 have been orthorectified. The other 24 RADARSAT-1 scenes were not orthorectified because they are peripheral or complementary images. In addition, 21 scenes have been obtained and orthorectified for part of southern Alberta.
The 250 orthorectified scene images for northern Alberta are tiled to 25 1:250 000 scale NTS map areas. The images for each NTS map area include four images from the four beam positions (S1/S7 and ascending/descending). These four images are then used for principal component analysis to produce 4 principal component images for each NTS map area; i.e., PC1, PC2, PC3 and PC4 images. Each of the four principal components of the 25 tiled NTS areas is then assembled to produce the northern Alberta mosaic of principal component images. AGS makes the value-added images available to the public to allow further processing and interpretation of the RADARSAT-1 image data to obtain geoscience, environmental, forestry or other information.
