Geology is Everywhere Presentations

These six presentations were presented by Dixon Edwards at the Alberta Teachers Association Science Council Conference 2004 on November 12, 2004, at a workshop entitled Rocks, Resources, History and Society: Connecting Geology to Societal Desires and Needs.

The online presentations are Flash. If you don't see anything when you click on the below links, you will need to install the free Flash player from Macromedia.

You can also download the PowerPoint slides. The information is provided for your use. Please acknowledge your source as:

Introduction and Science-Technology-Society Interaction
Geologists work in exotic places but geology is everywhere: in the classroom, our neighbourhood, downtown, in the river valley and in our region. (PowerPoint slides)

My Classroom
Geology occurs in your classroom and in every room in your house. In this show, I will describe a few of the things made from geological materials. This show illustrates things made from rocks, through technology for the benefit of society. Let’s look. (PowerPoint slides - 17 MB)

My Neighbourhood
Geology occurs in my neighbourhood and yours. A short walk will take you to amazing sites. The neighbourhood is an unparalleled resource for seeing or teaching geology. In this show, I present observations I have made in my neighbourhood that illustrate geological time, processes and materials. Please join me and my dog Sammy for a walk through my neighbourhood. (PowerPoint slides - 5 MB)

Downtown Edmonton Rock Walk
Geology occurs in our biggest cities. In fact, some of the most beautiful rocks are seen in downtown Edmonton and Calgary. We can even see fossils. This show describes geological materials in the form of building stone. Please join me for a walk through downtown Edmonton.
Also see our Virtual Fieldtrip: Rock Walk Edmonton listed at the top of our Outreach page. (PowerPoint slides - 3 MB)

The River Valley
The river valley is a great place to see and study geology and review Edmonton’s long history of river valley resource production. In this show, I describe geological materials present in the valley and discuss theories illustrating time and processes, like valley formation. (PowerPoint slides - 4 MB)

The Region Around Me
The Edmonton region is a source of great mineral and fuel riches. In this show, I describe geological materials present in this and the Calgary regions. I will describe how these materials occur in the earth and, in the case of salt, the process by which it forms. I will also present a general discussion about how to categorize rocks. This can be used with the rocks in the river valley and the building stone rocks found downtown. (PowerPoint slides - 7 MB)
