Springs of Alberta Inventory Program

Program Goal

Raven fish hatchery

Raven fish hatchery near Caroline, Alberta.

The first phases of the springs compilation work have focused on compiling springs data into a database, as well as creating GIS layers. During the compilation work, we discovered discrepancies between the different datasets. This will require fieldwork to resolve. For instance, when we look at a map of spring locations, there are multiple occurrences of a given spring because the location of the spring has been reported differently in the different data sources. We have conducted fieldwork to physically check these discrepancies, but it is not feasible to check all of them because of the large number of springs.

In the coming years, we will continue our fieldwork to solve this problem and explore new technologies to help with our mapping work. Specifically, we are looking at using satellite information to test this technology and how it can be used in our mapping.

We welcome Albertans to share with us their knowledge of spring locations by contacting us. If you know of spring locations on your property or near you, please e-mail us the following information:

We will use that information as we refine our inventory of springs. Your contact information will not be shared with other organizations.
