Saline Aquifer Mapping Program

Program Goal

There are many possible uses of the pore space in saline aquifers:

• CO₂ storage
• geothermal energy
• water production or storage

These uses may alter the groundwater systems within these aquifers.

By characterizing the geology and hydrogeology of these systems, we can better understand the cumulative effects these different processes could cause from continued or competing uses of the pore space. Characterizing the rock framework geologically and hydrogeologically is the first step towards this objective. A comprehensive evaluation of the regional geological and hydrogeological setting is the ultimate goal of the program.
