Description:
Abstract:
Drillhole information was compiled by the Alberta Geological Survey from public mineral assessment file reports for 397 holes drilled in or near the Athabasca Basin in Northeastern Alberta. The work was done in support of the ExTech IV project led by the Geological Survey of Canada.
Purpose: For depicting drillhole locations and summary information in GIS form, at a regional scale.

Data Quality Information:
Logical Consistency Report:
This data is a compilation of drillhole data extracted from mineral assessment reports on file at the Alberta Geological Survey. Logical consistency of the positional and attribute data is largely dependant on the quality of the report. There is no relationship, spatial or otherwise, among sets of holes drilled by one company to those of another.
Completeness Report:
Believed to be the complete set of holes drilled in and/or around the Athabasca basin up until approximately 2001, as found in publically available assessment reports (i.e., information flagged as confidential up to that time is not included).
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
No specific accuracy tests were conducted. Subjective examination upon georeferencing suggests cumulative errors in horizontal accuracy are plus/minus 250m on average and up to 500 m for certain holes where fiducial markings on the maps were poor.
Lineage:
Process Step:
Process Description:
Drillhole descriptive data were compiled into a spreadsheet in MS Excel. The hole locations were digitized in one of three ways: 1) scanning paper maps into TIF format and georeferencing the image in ArcInfo, digitizing and tagging in ArcView; 2) digitizing the points on a digitizing table using ArcInfo; or 3) plotting the holes from a source map onto a topographic 50,000 scale base map and extracting UTM coordinates from the base map, then creating a shapefile from the coordinates. The resulting points were subsequently tagged with the DrillholeId, a unique numeric identifier. Attributes from the spreadsheet were joined to the shapefile attribute table. The final, fully attributed shapefile was then written out using ArcView 3.2.

Process Step:
Process Description:
Drillholes on the north side of Lake Athabasca (181 holes altogether) were re-georeferenced, using Indian Remote Satellite imagery as the base. Scanned images of assessment report maps on file at AGS were re-registered and rectified using ArcGIS v. 8.3. Two new fields were added to the shapefile attribute table to track each drillhole source by assessment file number and map number, and the georeferencing base used.
Process Date: 2005
Process Step:
Process Description:
Corrected the attribute values in fields 'Case_Depth' and 'OBThick' for records with CompHoleID WB-1, WB-2, WB-3, WB-4. Values were originally entered in feet, and should have been converted to metres.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
The following discrepancies were encountered while correcting drillhole locations for the area north of Lake Athabasca. Company hole ID (COMPHOLEID) FS-104 was not shown on either of the two assessment file drillhole location maps for locating this set of holes (i.e. MIN19790001: Map No. 3 and MIN19780001: Map DDH Location Plan and Results; 1976, 1977). It was inferred to be at a location on the map near holes FS-103 and FS-105 that was unlabeled. Hole FS-056 was shown in two locations on the 1979 map, and at FS-067 in the 1978 map; FS-067 was assumed to be incorrectly labeled in the 1979 source. FS-057 and FS-071 are both shown on the 1978 map, however FS-071 was not shown in the 1979 source map; the 1978 source map was taken as the correct one for holes FS-071 and FS-057, although it shows FS-071 where FS-057 is plotted on the later map.
