Using the Interactive Geological Maps

Use the interactive map to find information about Alberta geology, including bedrock formations, mineral occurrences, structures,  surficial geology, drift thickness, bedrock topography, kimberlites, well and diamond drillhole locations, groundwater chemistry, and AGS' RADARSAT-1 data holdings.   Click on the map using the tools described below to explore the geology of Alberta.  Querying any of the layers will bring up a results page which, in many cases, contains links to other information such as photos, core logs, detailed reports, and data sets.

Here's how to navigate and query the map.

Zoom in - Click the zoom in tool, then click a spot on the map on which to zoom in. Change the zoom in magnification factor by typing a number between 2 and 10 in the Zoom Factor box

Recentre map- Use to centre the map on a new point. Click on the recentre map tool, then click a spot on the map which you want to have as the new centre of the map.

Zoom out - Click on the zoom out tool, then click a spot on the map from which to zoom out. Change the zoom out magnification factor by typing a number between 2 and 10 in the Zoom Factor box

 Zoom to entire province - Click on this icon to reset the map extent to the entire province.

Query feature - Use this tool to get specific information about a layer or theme on the map. First choose the layer you want information about by clicking on the radio button beside the layer name's checkbox.  Click on the 'Query feature' tool, then click on the feature of interest in the map, e.g., a polygon in the bedrock geology layer. Feature information will appear in a new browser window, which may contain further links to other related content.

Print map - Use this tool to get a printer-ready map of the current view.

Help tool - Brings up this help page.

The currently active map tool will appear highlighted in blue when clicked.  Layers can be turned on or off in the map by checking (on) or unchecking (off) the box to the left of the layer name, then clicking on the 'Refresh Map' button.  The map will be re-drawn with the checked layers showing.
