Shallow Gas in Drift: Northwestern Alberta

Executive Summary

Shallow gas in drift has recently been exploited from the Rainbow and Sousa Fields of northwestern Alberta. In response to numerous requests from industry for information about the Quaternary geology where gas is being produced, this document presents preliminary maps of bedrock topography and drift thickness that show regional trends of buried valleys that may be targets for shallow gas exploration. This is part of a multiyear collaborative project between the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board/Alberta Geloogical Survey (EUB/AGS) and Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). The information in this document was presented on a poster panel for the EUB/AGS booth displayed at the 6th Annual Unconventional Gas Conference in Calgary, Alberta, November (2004).
