Oil Production from the Shunda/Pekisko - Mission Canyon

Major oil production from the Shunda and Pekisko formations and their Frobisher/Alida/Tilston equivalents occurs in southeast Saskatchewan and southern and central Alberta. Most of this production is located in stratigraphic traps along the erosional unconformity.

There are 25 Shunda/Pekisko oil fields with Initial Established Recoverable Oil Reserves of over 1 x 106m3 (6 MMBbls). Twenty of these major fields are in Saskatchewan. The ten largest Shunda/Pekisko oil fields, listed in order of Initial Established Recoverable Reserves, are shown in Table 1. Cumulative production data for Alberta are updated to the end of 1990 and for Saskatchewan to the end of 1989.

Seven of these ten largest Shunda/Pekisko oil fields occur in Frobisher/Alida/Tilston beds along the wedge edge in southeast Saskatchewan. The remaining three, Twining, Sylvan Lake and Medicine River, occur along the wedge edge in south-central Alberta. The most recent major Shunda oil discovery was in the Desan area of northeast B.C. in 1983. All Shunda/Pekisko oil fields contain light to medium gravity oil, with the exception of a few of the smaller Alberta fields .

Total recoverable oil reserves in the Shunda/Pekisko are estimated at 107. 5 x 106m3, of which 82.2 x 106m3 have already been produced. Initial Established In-Place Volume of Shunda/Pekisko oil reserves totals 653.9 x 106m3. There ane a total of 209 Shunda/Pekisko oil pools, with an average 514 x 103m3 recoverable oil reserves/pool. Table 2 lists the distribution of Shunda/Pekisko oil reserves according to In-Place Pool Size.
