Gas Production from the Shunda/Pekisko - Mission Canyon

Gas production from the Shunda and Pekisko formations is primarily derived from the Shunda and Pekisko wedge edges in southern and central Alberta, and to a lesser extent in northern Alberta and B.C. No Shunda/Pekisko gas production occurs in Saskatchewan or Manitoba other than solution gas.

There are thirteen Shunda or Pekisko gas fields with Initial Established Marketable Gas Reserves of over 1000 x 106m3 (35 BCF). The ten largest Shunda/Pekisko gas fields, listed in order of Initial Established Marketable gas reserves, are shown in Table 1. Cumulative production data are updated to the end of 1990.

Nine of these largest Shunda/Pekisko gas fields occur along the Pekisko wedge edge in south and central Alberta. The tenth, Hotchkiss, is a commingled Upper Mannville/Shunda gas field along the wedge edge in northern Alberta. Minor Shunda/Pekisko gas production is also present in northeast B.C. along the wedge Edge and in structural traps near the Peace River Block

Total recoverable gas reserves in the Shunda/Pekisko are estimated at 61.9 x 109m3, of which 27.9 x 109m3 have already been produced. Initial Established In-Place Volume of Shunda/Pekisko gas reserves totals 91.2 x 109m3. There are a total of 242 Shunda/Pekisko gas pools, with an average 256 x 106m3 recoverable gas reserves/pool. Table 2 lists the distribution of Shunda /Pekisko gas reserves according to In-Place Pool Size.
